Physiotherapy

Physiotherapists are university-trained professionals who specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of movement disorders

What should I expect from my first Physiotherapy session?

Your first PT session typically lasts between 30-60 minutes. Your Physio will conduct a thorough interview and physical exam to determine the root cause of your symptoms. Together, you and your therapist will make a plan to help you achieve your goals. You should come prepared to answer questions about your medical history, come with appropriate clothes so your Physio can see and touch your injured areas (think shorts for knees and hips or tank tops for necks, backs or shoulders).

Do I need a Doctor’s referral to see a Physiotherapist?

No, you do not need a referral to see a Physio. Some extended heal care plans require a referral but increasingly insurance companies are no longer requiring this. If you have questions about your particular plan, please consult your benefits information package.

What sorts of treatments will I receive?

Your Physio will work with you to determine the most effective treatment for your symptoms. Some common interventions include:

  • Manual therapy (hands on joint mobilization, massage, and stretching)
  • Exercise (this might be performed at the clinic, at home or both)
  • IMS/Acupuncture/Dry Needling (using acupunture needles to relieve nerve pain, muscle trigger points, and swelling)
  • Electotherapy agents (low level electric therapy can be helpful for pain, muscle spasm, or swelling)
  • Postural correction (this might include ergonomics, bracing, or exercise)
  • Return to work planning (if you’ve been injured at work, your Physio will help you determine when it is safe to get back to work
